A customized walk-in freezer for the elegant NoMad Restaurant on Broadway in New York City was designed and manufactured at the Imperial Brown East Coast facility.

NoMad, with its rich mahogany bar and dining room, was voted one of the Top 10 New Restaurants in the U.S. in 2013 by Gayot, the online “Guide to the Good Life” with restaurant, hotel, travel and other reviews. Jay Cheshes of online TimeOut listed NoMad as “Best New Restaurant” in 2012. He called NoMad opulent with some of the city’s most elegant cuisine.

The Imperial Brown walk-in freezer is installed in the restaurant’s prep area. One corner of the walk-in wall with the freezer door required a special notch for the walk-in to fit around an existing structural corner, according to Dan Hill, Accounts Manager for Imperial Brown. “Due to non-standard dimensions, our panels are a combination of high-density urethane edge (HDU) construction and low-density urethane edge (LDU) panels,” he said of the freezer.

Imperial Brown is the only manufacturing facility in the country with the ability to produce HDU/LDU combination panels. This new technique creates a product that has distinct price and technical advantages over traditional products, such as complete LDU or HDU walk-in coolers or freezers. The technique gives the factory complete flexibility to build walk-in coolers or freezers of any shape or size, while containing cost. The result is a stronger, consistent product, with a more efficient production time, a lower materials cost and a higher overall R-rating.

The freezer is 6’7 ½” tall, 9’6” long and it has a depth of 9’. Joseph Varaksa, Regional Sales Manager, worked on the project with food service equipment and supplies dealer H.Weiss Equipment Co. and Elizabeth Contracting of Armonk, NY.

NoMad is described by Time Out as “our first truly throwback (restaurant) to the golden age of Robber Baron New York, the turn of the last century.” The restaurant seats 120, with plush armchairs around tables, red velvet window treatments, and a library where a customer, for a time, could find free bottles of booze hidden among the books. NoMad, frequented by rock stars, is dedicated to the spirit of the Rolling Stones, with the band’s concert photos decorating the kitchen.
